Brush with creativity
Artist Rene Westbrook gives instructions and students paint near the stairway between the lower and upper elementary schools, where grades kindergarten-five spent three weeks creating a mural with a Grand Canyon theme. The project is one of several enrichment opportunities being funded by a $6,000 grant from the county for Gifted and Talented education. Others include summer math camp and a program on Native American culture. According to GaT teacher Laura Kelso, who wrote the grant, projects like this give educators an opportunity to expose all kids to enrichment programs and helps identify children with gifts that may not show up during regular classroom activities. There will be an open house tomorrow from 3-6 p.m. in conjunction with the sophomore class' Spring Fling carnival.
