Booster Club to offer camp help

The Booster Club is offering scholarships to student athletes who are interested in attending summer camp to help build a stronger athletic program at Grand Canyon High School.

Students who are interested in improving their skills should submit an application to the school office by June 1.

Tickets available for Lions raffle

Tickets are now on sale for the Grand Canyon Lions Club raffle held in conjunction with the annual postgraduation pancake breakfast this Saturday.

The cost is $2 per ticket or $10 for a strip as long as your arm (about 10 tickets).

Prizes include dining and lodging packages, gift certificates, a limited-edition Jack Nicklaus cashmere sweater from the 1978 British Open, a Bruce Aiken print and a Navajo rug.

For tickets or to donate prizes, contact any Lion. Tickets are also on sale at the Rec Center and at the El Tovar concierge desk. Also, watch for ticket sales at the Market Plaza General Store.

Theater class to be held Sundays

A free theater class is starting here with meetings every Sunday from 5-8 p.m. in the Rec Center piano room.

Class leader Kim will teach acting techniques, performing on stage, plays, opera and more. She has also asked NAU Drama Club, Creative Movement in Flagstaff and Flagstaff Light Opera to participate in several of the classes. You must be over the age of 16 to participate.

Rec Center to host blood drive

The Rec Center will be hosting a blood drive on Tuesday from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Stop by the Rec Center to sign up or go to www.bloodhero.com and enter zip code 86023.

Don't forget your photo ID the day of the drive ­ you can't donate without it. Also, remember to hydrate and eat a hearty, low-fat meal before donating. All donors will be automatically entered to win a 2007 Saturn Aura.

Youth summer program offered

The Coconino Rural Environment Corps (CREC) still has open positions available in their summer Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) in Flagstaff, Sedona and Williams. YCC is a conservation and service corps program for all 16-18 year old teens who want to make a difference in their world.

YCC participants work in small crews of six to eight with the guidance of youth mentors. Service projects are usually outside and may include trail construction and maintenance, fence construction, invasive species removal, park maintenance, community landscaping and more.

The position pays a living stipend of $270 per week. Participants who are 17 or 18 years old are eligible to become AmeriCorps members and earn college scholarships of $1,000 upon successful completion of their YCC term.

No experience is necessary‹only the desire to work hard and learn about the environment.

Co-ed softball league kicks off

The Grand Canyon Community Softball season starts Saturday, June 9, with a two-day tourney.

Regular game play begins on Monday, June 11. All teams interested in joining the league should have had their payment of $200 for the season (and an additional $50 for the tournament) turned in to the Rec Center by yesterday.

Game schedules will be posted on Friday.

Flagstaff vet to be at GC kennel

Dr. Fred Bush will be at the Grand Canyon Kennel on Tuesday, June 12, from 12:30-2 p.m.
