Man dies in fall from rim
A young man died in a fall from a Grand Canyon viewpoint at about 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8.
His friend and two visitors witnessed the fall, which occurred when the man lost his footing on an outcropping at Yaki Point. Witnesses called 911.
Search and rescue rangers located the man's body at around 1 p.m., about 250 feet below the rim. Recovery efforts were hampered by afternoon thunderstorms.
The Park Service is investigating the accident, which is the first accidental, fatal fall from the Rim this year.
The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
