Lady Phantoms split on road trip
The Grand Canyon Lady Phantoms went on a snowy road trip to Fredonia and Beaver Dam and earned an important road split in the 1A North Conference.
They lost to Fredonia 42-32, but came back and defeated Beaver Dam 47-16.
The Lady Lynx, who defeated the Canyon by 30 points in the Williams Tournament two weeks ago, ran into a more determined Lady Phantom team that battled back from a 17-point, half-time deficit to make a game of it.
The Phantoms played an aggressive man-to-man defense that frustrated the Lynx into 14 second-half turnovers. Megan Timeche had five steals and Miriam Bankston scored 15 points and had 14 rebounds in the Canyon's second half surge.
Head Coach Dan Lopez attributed the comeback to tough defense and taking care of the ball.
"When we do those two things, we can play with just about everyone in our conference. We had a poor second quarter when we only scored two points because of turnovers but the girls played well and never gave up," he said.
The next night at Beaver Dam, the team came out with same defensive intensity and outscored the D-backs 34 to 7 in the second and third quarter on the way to a 47 to 16 rout.
Tiffany Kerr scored 11 points and Bankston had 14 points to go with 11 rebounds and seven steals.
Magen Timeche also helped with seven steals and five assists.
The Canyon has a 1-2 conference record with key games at Williams and again at home against Beaver Dam on Jan. 9 and 10.
The Beaver Dam game on Saturday starts at noon with girls' JV, followed by the boys JV.
Girls varsity will start at 3 p.m. and the boys tip off at 4:30 p.m.
The boys dropped both of their games on the weekend with a final score of 64-59 with Beaver Dam and 41-34 vs Fredonia.
