50 evacuated for fire near Maswik

An early-morning fire in the propane storage area near Maswik led to the evacuation of about 50 guests from three lodge buildings on New Year's Day.

Xanterra Fire and Security personnel responded at about 5 a.m. to a report of a fire in the woods behind Maswik South.

When they arrived, they found flames coming from the propane equipment storage area and spreading to a nearby tree and porta-potty.

The general alarm was sounded and Xanterra, NPS and Tusayan fire departments responded.

Guests were evacuated from Maswik South buildings 4, 5 and 6 and sheltered for about an hour in Maswik Cafeteria where they were provided with warm beverages.

NPS is investigating.
