GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Members of the Grand Canyon Rotary Club are offering $1,500 in community grants, but the deadline for the grants is nearing. Rotary grants are awarded to non-profit organizations for programs and projects that benefit the local community. According to Judy Bryan with the Grand Canyon Rotary Club, the group funds the grant by way of their annual events.

"We raise money throughout the year through our different events, the Holiday Dinner Dance, the summer sunset supper, and we donate a portion of all of our fundraising monies to the local community non-profit organizations," Bryan said. "The money goes for making this a better community for those who live here. In the past we've given to organizations like the (Kaibab) Learning Center, the kennel, the soccer league has received funding from us, the music festival - a lot of the activities that involve community, especially the children. It does have to be a non-profit. We usually don't give to any other service organizations. It's usually the ones that aren't raising money on their own through fundraising like we do."

She said grant recipients will be notified during the upcoming community Rotary Chili-Cookoff, scheduled for Sept. 28.

"The Chili-Cookoff will be at the fire station in Tusayan," she said. "It starts at 5 p.m. and if you want to submit chili, you have to have your chili in by 4:30 p.m."

Rotarian Greg Bryan said there were a few easy steps that those interested in the grants need to keep in mind.

"There really isn't an application," he said. "It's more of an outline. They have to describe what it is they want to do, who their organization is, the purpose for their request and if there are other monies involved."

He said that, if another organization is also providing funding, that would be taken under consideration by the Rotary Club in making a determination.

Grant requests can be sent to the Community Grants Committee at P.O. Box 696, Grand Canyon, Arizona 86023.

Funds have been given to local organizations for as long as the Grand Canyon Rotary Club has been in existence, Bryan added.

"This is one of our long-standing programs," he said. "Rotary is an international program that helps people around the world. It helps solve a lot of challenges and needs. This is just one of the ways in the local area that we step back and help our local community, as well as the scholarships that we give to the high school kids and other local programs that we work to support. It's just a way to give back to our local community. We do this program twice a year. We do it now in late summer and then we do it again in the spring."
