Body of missing hiker found in Grand Canyon National Park
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. - A body, presumptively identified as 69-year-old Robert (Bob) A. Williams, was found today by park search and rescue personnel in the Hermit Basin area of Grand Canyon National Park.
The discovery ends a search that began on Tuesday, May 26, after Williams failed to return to his home in Surprise, Ariz., following a planned holiday weekend of hiking at Grand Canyon.
His car was found the next day, parked in the lot near the Verkamp's Visitor Center. Searchers covered about 14 miles of Rim Trail, narrowing efforts to the Hermit Basin area, at the western-most part of the park's developed area.
His body was about 200 feet below the edge of Hermit Trail, about a quarter mile south of Santa Maria Springs. The trailhead is about eight miles from where Williams' car was found.
The remains were transported by helicopter to the South Rim helibase wherethey were transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
