A scene from last year's Family Fun Day

VALLE, Ariz. - Locals can enjoy a day of free activities and help support their neighbors at Family Fun Day in Bedrock City in Valle on Sunday. It will be from noon to 6 p.m.

It is being sponsored by North Country Health Care, Grand Canyon Tusayan Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau and northern Arizona businesses from Grand Canyon to Flagstaff. It was organized by John Robinson, who works as a taxi driver for Xanterra and hopes to make this an annual event to help local communities.

He organized the first Fun Day, which was held at the Rec Center on Labor Day. He said that scheduling conflicts, especially with entertainment, prompted him to hold it earlier this year.

It will be held in Valle this year and he plans to rotate to other communities in coming years so that one place doesn't bear the whole cost of supporting it.

Robinson said that as the event moves around, it will benefit the community where it is held. This year, recipient of all proceeds, including from a silent auction, will benefit the Valle Food Bank, which operates out of the Planes of Fame Museum. Attendees also get half-price admission to the museum.

He said he became aware of the need in Valle over Thanksgiving, when the food bank was nearly broke with nothing but peanut butter and some canned vegetables. He and other residents, as well as local businesses such as Delaware North, pitched in to make sure there were turkeys and hams for Christmas.

"I decided to have it in Valle this year because of the economy," he said. "It's hard to keep going to Tusayan or to have businesses sponsoring something that doesn't benefit their local community."

Admission is free, with free hot dogs and refreshments. Live music will be provided by Rachael Barnett and the Grand Canyon National Park All-Star Band.

Activities include three-legged races, face painting, balloon animals, water balloons and pony rides. There will also be a baking contest with prizes for best in cookies, cake, pie, bread and cupcake.

Health screenings will be offered by North Country.

There will also be 20 acres of rides and games, with attractions to include Ponies for a Party and Wild West Entertainment.

Special Olympian Bill Barber will also host a silent auction to benefit that organization.

There will also be a special historical civil war reenactment with the Drum Corps, with extra uniforms for visitors who would like to participate.
