Historic B-17 flying in to Grand Canyon Airport
The WWII bomber "Sentimental Journey" will visit Grand Canyon Airport from May 15-17, for a display in honor of Arizona veterans.
The B-17 Flying Fortress, one of only a handful still flying, will arrive at noon on Friday, May 15. It will be on display until 6 p.m. that day, then from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17.
B-17 tours will be offered for $5 for adults, $3 for children ages five-12 and free for those under five. B-17 flights are available for $425.
The plane is restored to its 1944 configura-
tions and is maintained and operated as a flying museum by the Commemorative Air Force Arizona Wing Aviation Museum based in Mesa.
They are touring Arizona airports this spring with the theme of honoring Arizona veterans.
The Arizona Wing is an all-volunteer organization whose members are dedicated to preserving aviation history and wartime memorabilia for future generations.
On display in the Mesa museum at Falcon Field Airport is the world famous B-17G Flying Fortress "Sentimental Journey" restored to its 1944 WWII configuration. Also displayed is a B-25 Mitchell that flew out of Corsica during WW II, a T-6, C-45, F4 Phantom, Mig 15 & 21, A-26 Invader, L-16 Grasshopper and AFS2 Guardian.
The museum displays memorabilia from WWII and the Home Front through Vietnam and includes uniforms, leather flight jackets, medals, photographs, and other artifacts.
