Students honored in awards ceremony

Arielle Schoblom was named valedictorian of the class of 2009 and Luke Bowman was named salutatorian at last week's high school awards ceremony. The ceremony recognized students in grades nine-12 for academic and extra-curricular achievements, service to school and community and demonstrations of character.

The awardees are:

Seniors

Arielle Schoblom - Valedictorian; recognized for best research paper; met AIMS standards; awards for excellence in precalculus, economics and physics; recognized for providing superior help in the kindergarten classroom and valuing reading; Student Council president; National Honor Society year three; Count on Me Award from Mrs. Crumbo; Grand Canyon Scholar; American Legion Award for girl with the highest grade point average. She also received the following scholarships - University of Arizona Wildcat Excellence Award ($26,000), Paco N. Hunter Memorial Scholarship ($1,200), Xanterra Scholarship ($1,000), Karakker Scholarship for students pursing a career in sciences or the medical field ($3,000) and the Provost Scholar from Oregon State University for $7,000 for four years. She was also awarded, but will not use, the Distinguished Scholar Award from Arcadia University ($18,500).

Luke Bowman - Salutatorian; exceeded AIMS standards; International Baccalaureate Award; Grand Canyon Scholar; National Merit Scholarship Program letter of commendation and American Legion Award for boy with highest grade point average. He also received the following scholarships - Northern Arizona University Raymond Educational Foundation Scholarship ($1,500), Arizona State University President's Scholarship ($36,000), University of Arizona Wildcat Excellence Award and acceptance to the Honors College, Northern Arizona University President's Scholarship ($15,000), Northern Arizona University Merit Scholarship ($7,000); Regents High Honors Endorsement Award ($5,774), Xanterra Scholarship ($1,000), Rotary Club Scholarship ($1,000).

Laura Badillo - Met AIMS standards, dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Culinary.

Cruz Caballero - Dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Hospitality, Hospitality student internship.

Erik Gerber - Met AIMS standards, dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Culinary.

Emily Hayes - Met AIMS standards, dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Hospitality, Hospitality student internship and Service to School Award. She also received the following scholarships - Northern Arizona University Raymond Educational Foundation Scholarship ($1,500), Xanterra Scholarship ($1,000), Rotary Club Scholarship ($1,000), Grand Canyon Rec Center Scholarship ($2,000), Horatio Alger Scholarship ($5,000).

Chelsey Palmer - Dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Culinary, Native American Education Committee Scholarship ($500).

Marla Poleyquiva - Met AIMS standards, dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Culinary, Culinary Arts Achievement and Music Directors Award.

Jessica Shields - Met AIMS standards, Outstanding Creativity in Art, American Legion member scholarship ($5,000).

Christopher Shirley - Met AIMS standards, Excellence in Economics and the Northern Arizona University Merit Scholarship ($1,750) which he will not use as he will be attending the University of Arizona.

David Spoehr - Perseverance and Determination Award, dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Culinary.

Bryan Struble - Met AIMS standards, Superintendent's Award from Dr. Sheila Breen and Service to School plaque. He also received the following scholarships - Northern Arizona University Raymond Educational Foundation Scholarship ($1,750), Xanterra Scholarship ($1,000), Bruce Aiken Rotary Scholarship ($3,000), Lions Club Scholarship ($2,500).

Faustina Torivio - Dual enrollment completer cord and certificate in Culinary.

Daniel Trenchard - Met AIMS standards, Excellence in Precalculus, Best Creative Writer Award, student council treasurer, Musician of the Year, Hugh Shevlin Award and Male Athlete of the Year. He also received the following scholarships - Paco N. Hunter Memorial Scholarship ($1,200), Thurston Memorial Scholarship ($1,000), Booster Club Scholarship ($1,000), Delaware North Greenpath Environmental Scholarship ($2,000) and Grand Canyon Rec Center Marathon Scholarship ($2,000).

Andres Velazquez - Met AIMS standards, Papillon Helicopters Scholarship ($1,000), Canyon Flight Trading Co. Scholarship ($2,000), Excellence in Economics and University of Arizona MacBook Award, Lions Club Scholarship ($2,500).
