Hance/Watson burn to start

Today, Oct. 2, Grand Canyon National Park Fire Management will initiate the Hance/Watson 1 RX Prescribed Burn.

This prescribed fire unit is located approximately two miles south of Grandview Point and Highway 64 and is surrounded by two prior fires from summer 2009, the Ruby and the Game Reserve. This is a third entry prescribed fire with the objective of reducing ground fuels.

Approximately 550 acres will be treated using hand and aerial ignition. If the test burn is successful and weather conditions do not deteriorate, ignition is planned to be complete by early afternoon.

Impacts from the fire are projected to be minimal, with possible road delays on Highway 64 and the potential of a smoke column visible from the east. Some smoke and fire activity may be visible for several days, and crews will be monitoring.
