GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Both the Grand Canyon Phantoms soccer and Lady Phantoms volleyball squad scored wins recently as they took on players from Northland Preparatory Academy, Seligman and Camp Verde.

The Phantoms soccer squad played a strong home game against Northland Preparatory Academy Oct. 1, taking the win in the game with a final score of Grand Canyon 3, Northland Prep 0. Phantom Luke Streit was credited with two goals in the game, while Phantom Chris Vessey is credited with one. Phantom Cuco Jaime is credited with an assist in the Oct. 1 match.

"Our midfield and defense played a strong match," said Coach Greg Cain. "Defensively we limited their shots on goal and played with more poise. During the second half we calmed down and played more of a possessive game, which resulted in more shots and all three of our goals."

The Grand Canyon boys went on to play against Camp Verde Oct. 10. Despite a total of 10 saves and two shots on goal, the Phantoms took a loss for the evening with a final score of Camp Verde 6, Grand Canyon 0.

Cain said the recent match was a bit of a disappointment for him.

"Camp Verde is a quality opponent, with skilled players, but we did not make it a very competitive game," Cain said. "We have been working on certain skills and ideas over the last three to four weeks and were simply not able to implement these in our game. Fortunately we will have another opportunity against Camp Verde in two weeks."

The Phantoms will play a home game against Chino Valley Friday. The game is scheduled to begin at noon. They will play another home game against Camp Verde Oct. 22 with game time scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Lady Phantoms

The Lady Phantoms of Grand Canyon School, meanwhile, played a couple of varsity matches, and one junior varsity match, against Seligman Oct. 10. The Lady Phantoms varsity squad took a win in the first set of games. Final scores for the first match were 25-23, 27-29, 25-22 and 25-12. The junior varsity squad took the win in the next set of games, winning all three with final scores of 25-27, 25-16 and 15-7. Seligman took the win in the final varsity match, winning all three with final scores of 21-25, 19-25 and 12-25.

The Ladies are scheduled for tournament action Saturday in Phoenix. They are scheduled to play an away game against Ash Fork Oct. 23, with game time slated to begin at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
