Ride the rails on the Verde
Stunning views abound on train
Passengers aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad will find a unique opportunity to view Sinagua Indian ruins and a monocline fold, pass through a 680-foot man-made tunnel and traverse the North Verde River, home to a variety of endangered and endearing waterfowl and wildlife.
The three-hour, 40-mile round trips run from Clarkdale to Perkinsville and back. The journey takes passengers through the Sycamore Wilderness Area along the Verde River, through two national forests and the wilderness area.
The historic train has Pullman Standard coach cars circa 1946, pulled by a FP7 engine - one of only 12 such models left in North America. It takes two engines to pull the train at a speed of 12 mph.
Wildlife artist Doug Allen painted the beautiful eagles on the outside of the engines.
The highlights of the trip include a ride into a 680-foot man-made tunnel, viewing the ancient Sinagua Indian ruins and travel through the largest IBA (Important Bird Area) in Arizona.
The vintage train rides the old rails and crosses over old-fashioned trestles.
The Verde Canyon Railroad offers several travel packages including lodging and train tickets. For more information, call (800) 293-7245 or (928) 639-0010.
