Lady Phantoms 1-3
Girls end week with a win against White Cone
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - The Grand Canyon School Lady Phantoms traveled to both Seligman and White Cone last week, walking away with a win and a loss.
The JV squad fell to Seligman Dec. 10 28-15. Head Coach Andrew Aldaz said the girls played fairly well with 30 shots at the basket in the first half and 30 in second half as well.
"We just didn't score enough to win," he said. "We had a lot of opportunities, we just didn't score."
Aldaz said he expects the JV squad to continue to improve throughout the season. He singled out Morgan Timeche, Cori Yazzie and Katrenna Haswood for their solid play.
The Lady Phantoms varsity team didn't fare much better, losing to Seligman 53-30.
Aldaz said the girls struggled turning the ball over and missing shots playing against a man-to-man defense.
"Shots just weren't dropping," he said. "Didn't have a very good day. Seligman is one of the toughest teams in our conference. That is one of the things, when you go over there you have to have you're A game."
Standouts for the varsity squad were Chelsea Curtis on point and wing and Madison Berry. Timeche and Yazzie both played well off the bench as well.
"Being underclassmen, they've stepped up to help the varsity team," Aldaz said.
The following day, the Lady Phantoms varsity team again hit the road to take on White Cone. Following Friday's loss, the girls regrouped to come out strong.
In a close game, Grand Canyon prevailed 44-37. Some of the Phantom's starters did not make the trip to take ACT tests in Flagstaff. Aldaz said his younger players stepped up to fill the void.
Seniors Curtis, Berry and Jordan Jerol all made big contributions to propel the Lady Phantoms to a win.
The Lady Phantoms take on Fredonia at home Friday.
