Editorial: great lectures on tap for February
Have a thing for the southwest? Is there more you want to know? No problem.
Organizers have been working hard to bring a number of exciting lectures to northern Arizona for those interested in topics related to this part of the southwest and the Grand Canyon. Lectures are planned for Flagstaff, Glendale and Prescott as part of the 2010 Community Lecture Series. This year also marks the second year for the popular Ranger Lecture Series, offered in conjunction with the National Park Service (NPS). That series will be held at Cline Library, located on the campus of Northern Arizona University. For those of us in northern Arizona, the Flagstaff and Prescott lectures will offer an intriguing glimpse into the area without having to travel too far.
The lectures are offered each year by the Grand Canyon Association, Cline Library, the NPS, KNAU, and the Prescott Public Library, and are usually a popular attraction. As always, the best way to support the lecture series is to get out and attend one or two, or even all, of them.
"Flagstaff" author James Babbitt will present his lecture on the early history of Flagstaff tonight at Cline Library. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. and is free of charge. Babbitt's new book on the area's history is available now through Arcadia Publishing. "Flagstaff" can be found in a number of Flagstaff bookstores, as well as online booksellers.
Grand Canyon National Park Archeologist Ian Hough will present his free lecture on archeological research at the Grand Canyon Feb. 3 at Cline Library. Hough, a vanishing treasures archeologist with the NPS, will share recent archeological findings related to the Grand Canyon during the lecture.
Another lecture on tap for February is a presentation entitled "Murl Emery: Historical, Hysterical Pioneer of the Lower Colorado River." Brad Dimock will present the free lecture, slated to begin Feb. 14 at 2 p.m., at the Prescott Public Library. Dimock will also present his lecture on Murl Emery in Flagstaff on Feb. 17. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. at Cline Library. Dimock recently edited and published a book on Emery written by Robert S. Woods. A book signing will follow the presentation. Parking for the Cline Library lectures can be found west of the library in P13, located along Riordan Road.
Another fun aspect of the lectures is that they are available on You Tube as well, thanks to the work of Jack Pennington with the Grand Canyon Association, who posted the videos online. A link to the videos can be found by visiting the Association's Web site at www.grandcanyon.org.
