GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - The body of a young woman found deceased in an area below the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park near the Toroweap Valley July 8, has been identified as that of 22 year-old Kathryn Roth of Springdale, Utah.

Grand Canyon National Park rangers located Roth's body approximately .2 miles below the start of the Lava Falls Route.

A man had called the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center July 7 at approximately 8:20 p.m. to report Ms. Roth as overdue. She had gone to Tuweap July 6 with the caller's son. The man said that his son was going to hike down the Lava Falls Route to gain access to the Colorado River for a float trip. When Roth failed to return home, the man became concerned and reported her overdue to the National Park Service.

Park rangers launched a search for the rafter the morning of July 8, locating him late in the morning. The young man indicated that he had last seen Ms. Roth on the Lava Falls Route at mid-day on Tuesday. Park rangers then began an aerial search of the Lava Falls Route and located her body at 1 p.m. Her body was flown to the Kingman Airport yesterday, and then transferred to the Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. An investigation is being conducted by the National Park Service.
