FLAGSTAFF, Ariz - On Nov. 20, 140 girls from Flagstaff, Grand Canyon and Page will meet at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff at 10 a.m. to complete the New Balance Girls on the Run 5K presented by SKY Renewable Energy. This event is a celebratory conclusion to the fall season of Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona. The girls will be joined by friends, family, coaches, and community members who support their effort to accomplish a goal of completing an untimed, non-competitive 5K run or walk at their own pace.
Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Girls on the Run offers a life-changing, experiential, character development program for girls in the third through eighth grades.
The curriculum-based program uses the power of running to provide girls with the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their gifts, and activate their inner power. The New Balance Girls on the Run 5K presented by SKY Renewable Energy is a annual celebratory event that concludes the fall season. The event allows participating girls participating in Girls on the Run to show their family, friends, and community the transformation that has taken place over the course of the 12-week program season. Each girl is partnered with a Running Buddy - either an immediate family member or a female volunteer from the community - who will accompany and encourage the girls as they reach their goal of completing the 5K.
Community members are invited to walk or run the 5K in support of the girls. A registration fee of $20 goes toward an event t-shirt, refreshments, and a goody bag. Strollers and friendly dogs on leashes are welcome. For more information or to register, visit http://www.gotrna.org/newbalancegotr5K.html.
Volunteers are also needed along the course to cheer girls on and keep them motivated to move forward toward the finish line. To volunteer, contact Stephanie Ludwig at Stephanie@gotrna.org.
