VALLE, Ariz. - Wilmaaaa!
Who doesn't recognize that familiar voice and to whom it belongs? It's Fred Flintstone, and in Linda Speckels' opinion, everyone has a Fred Flintstone in their life.
Her "Fred" might come in the form of Bedrock City, the unique theme park located off Highway 64 in Valle.
"We have people come from all over the world who have been here before and decided to visit the place again," Speckels said. "Everyone can relate to Fred and Barney, or Fred and Wilma."
The Speckels have been celebrating the 40th anniversary of Flintstones Bedrock City all summer, but their annual firework display, held in conjunction with the Valle Grand Canyon Airport's air show Thunder over the Coconino on Aug 25, will be the highlight of the year.
From 7-11 p.m., Flagstaff-based band The Rounders with Wade Lashley will be adding their unique brand of Americana rock to the mix, while delicious barbecue is served.
"The fireworks are the best I've seen in northern Arizona. You think they are over with, and they just keep going and going," Speckels said.
Local resident Connie Freeson said that because she lived in the Grand Canyon area for so many years, Bedrock City and their annual firework display has a growing nostalgia for her.
"We had limited entertainment out here growing up, so when Linda threw a party they were always a lot of fun," she said. "They make me think of all the fun I used to have out here. For locals it is something special."
It hasn't all been smooth sailing. The beautiful garden hasn't come without a price. Speckels said over the 40 years she's run Bedrock City, growing flowers has been her biggest challenge.
"Between the water and the wind and the frost, this garden, after my husband passed, has had many looks," she said.
