Obituary: Debbie Lu Evans (Stoppa)

Debbie Lu Evans (Stoppa), age 58, beloved wife, parent, daughter, sister, friend, and community member, died from a heart attack on Sunday, March 11, 2012.

Debbie was born in Phoenix on Dec. 18, 1953 and lived the last 20 years of her life in Tusayan. She is survived by husband, Robert Evans; sisters, Janice Stoppa Hoiden and Scarlett Stoppa; daughters, Kellee Kell and Renee De Risio; and nephew, Austin Hoiden. She was preceded in death by mother, Mary Lu Stoppa (Dolson); father, Edward Stoppa; and sister, Kathie Riedel.

Debbie's sensitive, nurturing spirit was obvious in the caring she showed toward her loved ones, animals, and the work she did within the Tusayan community, particularly for the Chamber Music Festival. Her sense of adventure took her from coast to coast, including riding the rails in the '70s. She loved cooking, growing herbal remedies, reading, getting out in nature, and keeping contact with friends and family, many of whom she met when she and Rob generously opened their home to Grand Canyon visitors. What marked her life significantly was the many challenges she survived, and her ability to still find joy. Although she was wise to the world, she preferred to see with hopeful eyes.

A memorial service will be held at Rain Tank Canyon, south of the Grand Canyon Airport, on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 1 p.m. In lieu of sending flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.
