Breaking ground for Grand Canyon youth
Phase 1 of construction on the School-Community Park scheduled to be complete Nov. 28
TUSAYAN, Ariz. - A long-awaited park in Tusayan is on the horizon as officials with the town of Tusayan and the Grand Canyon School District celebrated a groundbreaking for the park Oct. 1.
Phase 1 of construction on the School-Community Park is scheduled to be complete Nov. 28. The park will include a lit multi-use sports court, a tot lot and parking.
Park Project Manager Andrew Aldaz said the groundbreaking marks a great day for Tusayan as many partners pulled together to make a 15 year-old dream a reality.
"The idea of a community park lived with Pete Shearer for over 15 years. Without the town, the school, and the many community businesses that have donated funds, this wouldn't be happening today," Aldaz said.
Pete Shearer said credit needs to be shared with John Reuter who has worked since the late 90s to create a park in Tusayan.
Tusayan Mayor Greg Bryan indicated that the park is a great tribute to the ability of community members to work together for a common good. The following contributors to the first phase of the park's construction include the town of Tusayan, Grand Canyon Unified School District, Stilo Development, ClayAnn Cook, The Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce, Red Feather Lodge, Bill Foster Memorial, Delaware North, The Sanitation District, Coconino County Supervisor Carl Taylor, APS, Canyon Plaza, Michael Taylor Architects, Plateau Engineering and B's Construction.
With plenty of work yet to be done, Aldaz continues to encourage local businesses, alumni, service groups and interested individuals to contribute to the park. Individuals interested in helping with the park can email Aldaz at aaldaz17@gmail.com
Toward the end of the groundbreaking ceremony, Grand Canyon School District Superintendent Sharyl Allen pointed to two children in attendance remarking "the excitement of Tusayan children will ensure this park is put to good use."
