North Kaibab to implement Westlake burn this week
FREDONIA, Ariz. - The North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest plans to conduct the Westlake prescribed burn this week, depending on appropriate weather and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
The Westlake burn unit is located between FR 218 and FR 255, near the junction of FR 22 and FR 425.
The burn unit encompasses about 1,130 acres of predominantly ponderosa pine forest type.
This prescribed fire treatment is part of the forest's fire restoration program. Objectives for the burn include reducing hazardous fuels, recycling nutrients back into the soil, and restoring the natural role of fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.
Smoke may be visible in the Jacob Lake and Big Springs vicinity and Fredonia during ignition operations. The Forest appreciates public tolerance of increased smoke in support of its fire program.
