Annual Rotary Holiday Dinner Dance creates lasting memories

Tickets now available for Dec. 8 community fundraising event at El Tovar

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - On Dec. 8, the famous El Tovar Hotel will host The Grand Canyon Rotary Club's annual Holiday Dinner Dance. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

"It is the gala event of the year for this area," Rotarian Sharyl Allen said. "It's an opportunity to come an mingle at the El Tovar with friends you may not see on a regular basis and it's a great opportunity for people who care about this community to find a way to give to the community that they don't find in other ways."

The evening of dinner, dancing, auctions, raffles will also include a specialty entrée honoring the Rotary International Convention scheduled for Lisbon, Portugal. El Tovar Chef Matt McTigue and staff will provide dinner and Exit 64, a local band that has been a favorite for years, will supply the music.

"One of the things Yvonne (Trujillo) has asked the El Tovar is if we can have one dish that is Portuguese food," Allen said. "It helps keep in people's minds that Rotary is an international group and this year's theme is "peace through service." The international president always sets the theme."

This annual event is a major fundraising effort by Grand Canyon's Rotary on the Rim. Proceeds from fund local community grants, service projects and scholarships for students pursuing post-secondary learning.

"It's a fabulous evening of music, entertainment, great food, lots of prizes and fabulous silent auction items right before Christmas so people can get those special Christmas gifts," Allen said.

This year there will be tickets sold for cash prizes ranging from $100 to $5,000. The tickets are $20 each and can be purchased from any Rotarian. There will only be 1,000 tickets sold for this event.

Not only does Rotary host the holiday dinner dance, the service club also organizes community cleanups, Easter egg hunt, chili cook-off, community grants, scholarships, community member of the year, and a major partnership with the school/community park in Tusayan, in which Rotary has pledged to build the community ramada.

"Rotary is all about building community," Allen added. "So people that want, and are committed to those types of things, it's a small way that people that can contribute to community."
