GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Halfway through its track and field season, the Grand Canyon School (GCS) Phantoms has been busy getting results at its most recent meets at Goodyear and Sedona.

A small team competed in the Tiger Relays Millennium High School in Goodyear, March 29.

Luke Streit won the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 8 1/2 inches and Justin Jarrell finished second in the long jump, jumping 18 feet, 3 inches and Morgan Timeche came second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5 minutes 39 seconds.

Assistant track coach Chris Streit said many of the team members came away from the Goodyear meet with personal bests.

In the Red Rock Invitational at Red Rock High School on April 6, sophomore Tyler Jones took first in the freshman/sophomore high jump, jumping 6 feet, and second in the triple jump with a distance of 38-04.50. Senior Morgan Timeche finished third in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:54.34. Senior Luke Streit took third in the varsity long jump, jumping 40 feet, 2 inches.

The GCS Phantom track team is made up of 16 students, with around eight competing in meets.

GCS competes in Division IV. The school's athletic director and administration decide which meets the students will travel to during the season.

"Geographical location doesn't really matter in track, we go all over the place," Streit said. "Meets with electronic timing are considered state qualifier meets, so any time, throw or jump that happens at one of those meets could go towards state qualifiers. That's how kids get into state."

Streit said schools competitive with the team are similar to their basketball opponents. Smaller schools like Joseph City, Northland Prep, Camp Verde and Chino Valley are a few with comparable abilities.

The Phantom track team heads to Blue Ridge High School on Friday for the Blue Ridge Invitational. From there, the team will travel to Page April 20 for the Page Merchants Invitational, then Winslow April 26 for the 81st Invitational. State Finals are at Mesa Community College, May 10-11.
