Pile burns near Tusayan this month
Forest Service plans to burn more than 2,000 piles around Grandview Lookout
TUSAYAN, Ariz.- Kaibab National Forest fire managers plan to burn more tree, limb and branch piles this month east of Tusayan.
The Forest Service cut and stacked around 2,000 piles over the last few years near the Grandview Lookout. These piles cover about 200 acres along Forest Roads 310 and 2719. In December, firefighters burned about 35 acres of piles, but snowstorms made it difficult to access the area and get the piles to burn.
Starting Jan. 3 and throughout the month, fire managers plan to continue this fuel reduction work. With snow covering the ground, managers say this is a good time to ignite the piles, reduce the fuel load on the forest floor and reduce the risk of a high-intensity wildfire in the future.
More information on this project is available by visiting www.inciweb.org/state/3/ and looking under "Tusayan Ranger District Projects."
More pile burning information is available by calling District Fire Management Officer Quentin Johnson at (928) 635-8218.
