KLC to put on 'non' barn dance
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Music, food and fun are on the agenda for the Kaibab Learning Center's "Not in the Barn, Barn Dance."
The event takes place Sept. 21 from 5-10 p.m. at Apache Stables cookout site. In years past, Kaibab Learning Center (KLC) put on a barn dance in the park, right inside the Xanterra mule barn. Kaibab staff put on this popular fundraiser for about six years, but eventually the event fizzled out.
"It was a big event that just stopped happening," KLC board member Lori Rommel said. "And we decided to bring it back."
Because the learning center is in need of some financial backing, board members decided to breathe new life into the barn dance.
"For the last two years I've been on the board we are $40,000 short of our budget," Rommel said. "Our number one goal is to pay our licensing fee, and our payroll is dwindling as well."
Rommel said the idea started last spring. Ideas rolled around about how to have the barn dance in the mule barn, just like old times.
But because of safety precautions and health food standards, the venue became too complicated to manage. Instead, the board turned to Apache Stables, located just outside of the park.
"We started getting the ball rolling on this in August," Rommel said. "We started with zero budget and have since rounded up some wonderful sponsors and donors."
During the event, some of the raffle prizes up for grabs include Disneyland and Phoenix Zoo family passes, a Harley Davidson motorcycle day ride and an iPad. Local favorite Exit 64 will be provide danceable tunes throughout the evening.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Included in the ticket price is a barbecue dinner to which many local businesses contributed. Adults will also receive two free drink tickets, courtesy of Grand Canyon Brewing Company.
Board member news
The KLC board of directors is short two members. The board is looking for interested parties to join. The board of directors meets every third Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. at the center. The meetings are open to the public. Anyone who has ideas, skills or an interest in seeing KLC prosper is welcome, Rommel said. The board is specifically looking for a treasurer.
"Jeanne (Yost) is functioning right now as a director, a treasurer, as payroll person, curriculum coordinator, as a teacher, she does lunches, she's doing a lot," Rommel said.
