Pile burning on North Rim and Range Road planned
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. -National Park Service (NPS) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) fire managers are working together as the North Zone Interagency Fire Management Program and plan to burn piles of debris starting Sept. 29
The burns will extend over the next 30 days as weather conditions allow.
Piles consisting of tree trunks, branches, and pine needles are located along
the North Rim entrance and west of the Range Road.
The burn is a result of fuel reduction projects conducted along roadways, buildings and at-risk resources and helps prepare for future prescribed fires.
Park visitors may see fire vehicles and personnel and smell smoke during burnings. The piles are monitored until they are completely out. Smoke will be visible at the North Rim entrance station and along Highway 67.
For questions regarding the North Rim's pile burning projects, please contact Aaron Fritzer, North Rim Fire Operations Supervisor at 928-638-7949. For more on Grand Canyon National Park's fire management program, visit the park web site http://www.nps.gov/grca/parkmgmt/firemanagement.htm.
