Editorial: Williams-Grand Canyon News wins editorial awards

The newsrooms at the Williams-Grand Canyon News and Navajo-Hopi Observer are full of talented people who have the people in the communities they serve at the heart of everything they do.

At the recent Western News & Info editorial conference, everyone was recognized for their excellent work.

As a matter of fact, the editorial staff at both papers cleaned up at the annual award ceremony.

Katy Locke, who writes for the Observer and contributes to the Williams-Grand Canyon News on a regular basis, won the Journalist of the Year award for Western's non-daily publications. She deserves it.

The Observer covers a large geographic region - from Flagstaff to the west, across the Navajo Nation including Tuba City, Kayenta, Cameron and Window Rock to the far east. The paper covers the Hopi reservation as well. It is no easy task to cover such a diverse area and diverse set of people and communities.

Katy has become a crucial part of the Navajo-Hopi Observer's success in recent years. She has found her voice as a reporter covering the Navajo Nation, Hopi and the larger Native American community.

Grand Canyon reporter Loretta Yerian took home a stack of awards as well.

She took third place in News Photography, a third place in Page Design, a third place in Sports Writing, second place in Feature/Specialty Writing and first place for Favorite-Reader Story.

That's a pretty diverse skill set. She covers the Grand Canyon and Tusayan communities with care and produces interesting and newsworthy articles every week.

Editor Ryan Williams won awards in Feature, News and Sports Photography and took first place in Page Design.

As a news team, we're proud to cover the Williams, Grand Canyon, Navajo Nation and Hopi communities and we're proud to do it well.

We want everybody in these communities to feel represented in our papers. We value our readers. With that said, if you have a story you would like to see in our pages, let us know. Drop us an email. Here is how: editorial@williamsnews.com.
