GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - After starting the season off strong with 22 athletes and four student managers the Grand Canyon Phantom track and field team is a force to be recognized this season.
On March 25, the Phantoms traveled to Mogollon High School to compete in the Mogollon Early Meet. Neegoh Kaska provisionally qualified for the Division IV state track meet by throwing the discus 104 feet 9 inches. Candy Lopez and Jessica Richardson also provisionally qualified for the state meet in the high jump. Lopez cleared 4 feet 4 inches and Jessica cleared 4 feet 2 inches in their throws. Tyra Briones threw the discus 63'10" placing 15th out of 34 competitors. It was Briones second day throwing the discus.
During the Sedona Friendship meet in Sedona March 23 the Grand Canyon Phantoms track team was split into freshman and sophomore and varsity. Neegoh Kaska placed second in shot put and sixth in discus earning the Freshmen/Sophomore team 11 points. Kaska, Aleryn Reid, Jacob Richardson and Travis Moreno ran the 4 x 400 meter relay coming in second place with a time of four minutes 22 seconds.
The Lady Phantoms freshman/sophomore team earned points in the meet with Melisha Jeter-Nanacasia placing 3rd in shot put and Monica Dimas placing third in the 1,600 meter run. Savannah Perkins placed fifth in the 800 meter.
For Varsity the Lady Phantoms earned points when Candy Lopez tied for fourth place in the high jump. The 4 x 400 meter relay team placed fifth with Meaghan Donehoo, Candy Lopez, Monica Dimas and Savannah Perkins passing the baton.
"Expect to see great things continue from these students," said head track Coach Elna Perkins.
On April 1 the Phantoms traveled to Joseph City where Perkins said they anticipated breaking a school record in the women's 4 x 400 meter relay.
