Lady Phantoms wallop<br>Valley Lutheran by 35
GCNP — The Grand Canyon girls basketball team had no trouble with visiting Class 2A opponent Valley Lutheran on Dec. 22 and cruised to a 60-25 victory.
The Lady Phantoms were hitting on all cylinders offensively, taking leads of 18-9 after the first and 30-13 by halftime.
“The played very well offensively,” Phantoms coach Andrew Aldaz said. “That’s probably the best we’ve shot the ball in a couple of weeks.”
Grand Canyon had been working on a new offense this season but in the process, Aldaz said the Phantom defense has stepped backward a little.
“Defensively, we still have a lot to work on,” Aldaz said. “In order for this team to win, we need to play well defensively.”
The senior class punch of Katie Clayton and Erin Wahler had Valley Lutheran in a hole from the beginning. Those two Lady Phantoms accounted for 35 of the team’s 60 points. Clayton scored 21 while Wahler added 14.
Clayton hit a couple of three-pointers to complete her evening. Kristin Olsen was also up there with nine points.
Aldaz played a lot of younger girls in the game as well, still outscoring the Flames 17-2 in the fourth quarter. Jessica Hall scored her first hoop this season.
Grand Canyon participated in the Valley Lutheran Tournament last weekend in Phoenix and took first place. See next week's edition for a story.
Grand Canyon (1-2 in the conference) hosts Joseph City Friday at 5 p.m. and will head to Sedona Red Rock Saturday in nonconference action.
