Walters marks 25 years
with same gallery in Scottsdale
SCOTTSDALE — Noted artist Curt Walters delivered his largest Grand Canyon painting to a gallery in Scottsdale.

'Cathedral Staircase' is a 60-by-96 inch oil on canvas by Curt Walters.

Walters is celebrating 25 years with Trailside Galleries in Scottsdale. For the past decade, his efforts have helped raise $500,000 to fight Grand Canyon pollution. Recognizing his efforts, the Grand Canyon Foundation named him an honorary board member, sharing that honor with notables such as Sen. John McCain and actor Robert Redford.

Celebrating those milestones, Walters delivered his largest Canyon painting, "Cathedral Staircase," to Trailside Galleries.

"Trailside values its quarter-century representing Curt Walters and congratulates him on this milestone," said Maryvonne Leshe, the galleries' managing partner. "It's no coincidence that our long relationship has produced considerable success for both sides."

"Cathedral Staircase" is a dramatic 5-foot by 8-foot oil on canvas and captures an evening storm settling over the Canyon's famous landmarks, the Abyss, Tower of Set and Cathedral Staircase.

Walters did two study paintings on different visits to the Canyon, one 9-by-12 and one 11-by-14 in preparation for the larger painting, which he completed in studio.

"There was no way I was going to lash down a 60-by-96-inch canvas, let alone carry it in during these spring winds," said Walters, who normally paints on location.

Walters added that the Canyon view from his vantage point at the South Rim, west of Grand Canyon Village, demanded the special painting.

"I wanted to share the beauty which I observed at this time and in this place, with all those who will view this painting," Walters said.

This month, Grand Canyon Trust and Scottsdale Artist School will sponsor a Curt Walters art seminar for students to be held at Shoshone Point.

Trailside Galleries in Scottsdale has been Walters' exclusive representative in Arizona for more than 25 years. Trailside has a one-man show planned for the artist this October.
