Letter: Mucho Gracias, Tusayan community
To the editor:
I would like to extend a huge thank you to all those who came out and participated in our Tusayan Fiesta last Friday night. It was truly remarkable to see and feel the energy of nearly 500 residents of our community along with many Canyon visitors from around the world come together to celebrate as part of the Dia de La Familia and our National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Honorable former Arizona Governor Raul Castro gave an inspiring message of hope and perseverance and started off the celebration of culture with music, dancing, and activities throughout the evening. It was so pleasing to hear from many of our Hispanic residents as they told me how great it was to finally have an event in their honor and that "it felt just like a real Mexican fiesta back at home!" That was our goal all along as the Western Discovery Museum initially conceived to sponsor such an event. A special thank you to David Smith, Jacob Fillion and Deputy Superintendent Palma Wilson and the NPS team who helped organize the Dia de la Famila weekend events at the Canyon. John Rueter and the Camper Village team and ownership were instrumental in proving a perfect venue and stage for the event. And it simply could not have been done without the terrific help of Cecily Maniaci, Jaru Velazquez, and the entire team at Sophie's Mexican Kitchen who catered the event.
I have lived in Tusayan for many years and I have never seen an event quite like this and I'm so thankful to all those who made it such a wonderful evening. We were honored to have been a part of it.
