Valle man arrested for homicide
2-year-old victim dies of severe head trama Oct. 30
VALLE, Ariz. - On Oct. 29, 25-year-old Jose Zenaido Acevedo of Valle, Ariz. was arrested after Coconino County Sheriff deputies and detectives went to a Valle residence on the report of an unconscious 2-year-old. The child died later at the Flagstaff Medical Center and Acevedo was arrested on charges for homicide.
At about 10:50 a.m. the Williams Police Department received a 911 call of an unresponsive child at a Valle area home. The call was relayed to the Sheriff's Office and deputies, along with Guardian and Life Line emergency medical personnel, were immediately sent to the home. Prior to the arrival of first responders, the victim's mother returned home and made a second 911 call to report that her 2-year-old daughter was unconscious.
The child received on-scene emergency medical care and was flown to the FMC by helicopter.
Acevedo was described as the mother's boyfriend and living with the victim and her mother. The child's mother left her daughter in the care of Acevedo while she was at work. Detectives determined Acevedo gave multiple and varying accidental excuses as to why the child was unconscious. None of his explanations were consistent with the victim's injuries, which included severe head trauma.
Acevedo was arrested on charges of child abuse and aggravated assault and was taken to the Coconino County Detention Facility.
At about 8:10 p.m. on Oct. 30 a FMC doctor stated the victim had no brain activity and was later pronounced dead. Acevedo was arrested for homicide. Coconino County Sheriff's detectives and the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office are continuing this investigation.
