Fatal fall reported at Grand Canyon's Mather Point on south rim
Victim falls 400 feet into Canyon from popular tourist vantage point near Grand Canyon Village

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. Officials at Grand Canyon National Park say someone died after falling off the rim at Mather Point around 1:10 p.m. April 28.

The person fell about 400 feet below the south rim of the Canyon. The gender of the victim has not been reported. Mather Point is a popular vantage point with hundreds of people visiting the point everyday.

A National Park Service Helitak crew located the body. National Park Service Search and Rescue crews are working to recover the body from below the rim.

Mather Point is currently closed to the public and will remain closed until further notice.
